Car Junking Myths You Should Ignore

Thinking of junking a vehicle that you're no longer driving? Don't let myths about the process hold you back. From fraud to being liable for an incident with the vehicle, there are a host of rumors swirling around about this process that simply aren't true. Make sure you know how to discern fact from fiction.

You Can't Verify Legitimacy

When junking your vehicle, one of two things generally happen; it is refurbished and resold or it's pieced out. Whatever the case, most states have strict laws in place that require businesses to have appropriate licensing in order to be able to engage in these types of transactions.

Don't listen to the idea that there is no way for you to verify whether the company has the appropriate licensing. First, businesses will display their license in an open area. Second, should you want further assurance, you can simply contact the authority responsible for licensing to verify that the organization is in fact operating legally.

You Will Be Liable For An Accident

Another common myth is the idea that should the vehicle be involved in an accident, you could be held liable. As previously mentioned, some vehicles are refurbished and sold. Since the VIN remains with the vehicle, there is a concern that you could still be listed as the legal owner. However, when you transfer the vehicle, you also complete a transfer of liability request that is submitted to the local DMV.

This request lets the state know that you are no longer the responsible party for the vehicle and relinquishes your name. In the event the vehicle is involved in an accident or any other event, the new owner is solely responsible, not you.

The Car Must Be Operable

There are some people that are under the impression that in order to junk a vehicle, it must at least be running. This is also a falsehood. Many of these organizations will generally take a vehicle in any condition. While the amount of money you're offered for the vehicle will be based on the condition of the vehicle, these companies are typically willing to take any vehicle off your hands that you no longer want.

Even if the vehicle is no longer operable, tow services can be arranged. Provided you can provide a clear and free title for the vehicle, you can get rid of it.

Myths are simply untruths and in this case, you don't want to let a myth force you into keeping a vehicle you no longer want or need. You can easily and safely get rid of your old vehicle. For more information, contact companies like City Auto Wreckers.
